Violet Femmes

Did you know that chickens love violets?? Not only are they pretty wildflowers that grow prolifically in the Northeast, but these edible little purple gems are delicious treats for your backyard chickens. As an added bonus, violets are rich in vitamins A and C, and help with circulation. Admittedly, I have no idea how my chickens' circulation is, but I am assured that it won't be an issue now that we have this cute violet patch installed near the coop!

We already had a bunch of wild violets growing around the yard, so we simply transplanted them next to the coop for our little ladies to enjoy. They already love them!

What, what? Chicken butt!

There are plenty of other great wildflowers that chickens love, but some of our favorites are:

  • Dandelions

  • Nasturtium

  • Lavender

  • Chickweed

  • Chicory

  • Coneflower (Echinacea)

  • Marigold

  • Mint

  • Clover

Not only are these flowers pretty and healthy for your chickies, but many of them have other great properties too, like insect & rodent repellent, and odor neutralizer. So easy, and you can find most of these for free right in your backyard!
